What to Expect

In this module, you'll learn about the shift from institutionalized to person-centered support in disability and aging, and the human rights framework for service delivery. You'll explore barriers to empowerment and ways to address them, including the impact of social, physical, emotional, and cultural obstacles. The module covers support practices for various conditions like genetic factors and acquired brain injury. You'll understand legal and ethical considerations, such as codes of conduct and informed consent, and principles of empowerment and person-centered practices. Restrictive practices and their impacts will be discussed, along with positive support approaches. Strategies to help people exercise their rights, including using technology and assistive devices, will be highlighted. You'll learn how to access advocacy services and recognize indicators of abuse and neglect. The importance of maintaining privacy, dignity, and safety in all support activities will also be emphasized.
